Police respond to report of gunmen on Ky. campus

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Officials at Western Kentucky University say they're investigating a report of men armed with guns on campus.

University spokesman Bob Skipper says at least one building on the university's south campus has been evacuated and police are searching the area. University lawyer Deborah Wilkins says there are no reports of injuries.

The university is about an hour north of Nashville. South campus is home to Bowling Green Community College, one of the university's six undergraduate colleges.

Update at 4:42 p.m. ET: USA TODAY's Donna Leinwand has filed this report:

All main campus and BG Community College classes on south campus have been canceled for the remainder of the day and this evening.

The South Campus building on Nashville Road was evacuated earlier following reports that one or more persons were observed in the building with weapons. WKU Police, Bowling Green Police and State Police have conducted an extensive search of the building and the premises.

Following this, WKU PD received an unconfirmed report of shots fired in the vicinity of Pearce Ford Tower on the WKU main campus.

Police have confirmed that there was a physical altercation not involving weapons between individuals that occurred in or near PFT, but the police are interviewing witnesses on the scene to determine if weapons were or are present, or if shots were fired.

Officials have scheduled a 5 p.m. ET news conference.

Update at 4:27 p.m. ET: The lockdown has ended and officials have declared all clear. No gunfire was confirmed, but WKU officials say four individuals have been taken into custody for questioning.

Update at 3:35 p.m. ET: The superintendent of schools tells Bowling Green Daily News they have locked down three public schools near the university.

Here's a map of the campus. Police are said to be searching the building that's identified as No. 17 on this map.

Elissa Belak told the Glasgow Daily Times what she saw from her vantage point across the street from WKU.

“I know they’re on lockdown,” she tells the paper. “I saw some helicopters go over and we can see cop cars, but we don’t really know anything right now.”

Update at 3:10 p.m. ET: "What we believe we have is an altercation between a group of individuals," WKU spokeswoman Robbin Taylor tells CNN. "It began in one area of the campus, moved to another area of the campus."

Deborah Wilkins, another school official, tells Fox News that students, staffers and visitors are being asked to stay inside until an "all-clear siren alert goes out later."

Wilkins says they haven't found any witnesses or evidence to suggest weapons were associated with a "fistfight" that took place today on the school's satellite and main campuses.

Update at 2:48 p.m. ET: Western Kentucky University just posted a statement about the incident on its website:

The South Campus building on Nashville Road was evacuated earlier following reports that one or more persons were observed in the building with weapons. WKU Police, Bowling Green Police and State Police have conducted an extensive search of the building and the premises. At this time, the police have been unable to find any witnesses or evidence to support earlier reports that weapons were present.

At this time, the campus emergency warning system has been activated. Students and employees have been advised to remain indoors, in secure areas, until an "all clear" is issued.

Update at 2:45 p.m. ET: "We have not been able to confirm any gunshots" Robbin Taylor, a university spokeswoman, tells CNN.

"We have also not been able to confirm that anybody actually has a weapon," she adds.

Taylor says campus, city and state police are on the scene.
