"Down with the Queen!"
I am very happy to report that Louisville Democrat John Yarmuth has beaten Neoconservative rubber-stamp Anne Northup in a stunning victory (several thousand votes) for Kentucky's 3rd District congressional seat. This was a race that the national Democratic party did not take seriously, nor did the DCCC.
The Yarmuth campaign was largely self-financed, and owes it's victory to several things. First, hard work. John Yarmuth built a solid ground team that won the Louisville Primaries, and stormed on to take the 3rd District seat from Anne Northup, a person many thought unbeatable.
Next, there's an anti-Republican mood in Kentucky. The average voter sees the disaster the last few years have been and all they need do is look to those in power. Another contributing factor is Yarmuth's solid platform. He has solid positions on most issues, and seems to be eager to fight for the average person.
In the spirit of disclosure, I was not an initial Yarmuth supporter, but as the candidate of my party, he received my vote. And I was happy to do my part to take that seat away from a person, who I frankly believe to be part of America's "problem". Anne Northup has basically sold out this area to every big-business you can think of, all under the guise of doing the people's work. You can't vote with the Bush administration upwards of 90% and be doing anything remotely in the best interests of the voters. If most of the Bush administration's decisions have been wrong, it only stands to reason that she too, Northup, was also "wrong".
And this is also part of a larger story. The Democratic takeover of the U.S. House. This is a historic moment in the purest of terms. The people of the United States has said "enough" to those who would re-write the Constitution to fit their own devices. The people have rejected those who would send their children to fight in the name of liberty, yet base that fight on a lie. The people have taken back their House.
John Yarmuth is a part of that. As a member of the now controlling party of the U.S. House, I hope that he remembers the lessons of "the Bush years" and what that does to the average American. I hope that he remembers that America's poor, not just the so-called "middle-class" are hurting, and need a strong advocate.
And for the love of all that is good, BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!
