Kentucky is watching as the race for the White House spins out of control. To be honest, I haven't been able to watch in days. Days and days. Nothing other than the Discovery Channel, TLC, History, Star Trek, and South Park. There are so many things I would love to comment on. Snippets I have picked up here and there. But time has been at a premium lately...you know how it goes.
We, as a nation, have now lost over 4000 troops in Iraq. Better than 90% of them since the infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech. You remember..flight suit...banner..faux President..
I have simply been burned out. I think we all are. On everything. If you could have a chance to go back to 2000, how much more would you work to prevent Bush from taking office? What if you could rewind time, but keep the memories, and re-do the whole thing?
How much harder would you work to ensure that Gore won the White House? How many of you would re-vote for Nader? Brush aside all of the responsibility of Al Gore and the Democratic party for their loss for a moment, and just think about those.
Statistics say that political blogs are only read by people who agree with their positions. Neocons read their blogs, which means that centrist/liberals read mine. So, I'll address the choir directly: How far would you go to prevent Bush from ever taking office? Would you go door to door? Would you march in the streets? (those of you who didn't) Would you work your ass off to expose the Texas cowboy? Would you prevent 2 wars, possibly 9/11, a 400% increase in gas prices (and everything else), an economy in flames, 4000+ U.S. troops dead...
I have been firmly on the record as a Hillary Clinton supporter, up to the recent Telecom Immunity vote, and then it ended. See: Hillary addiction cured: More Government Betrayal
I have had to ignore many problems with her voting record, because I still think she would make a more competent President than Barack Obama. Obama will make a great President eventually...but I just think he's a bit green. But the Telecom issue was the last line I could allow her to cross and still get my vote.
I had accepted her response to the vote for the Iraq war. "If she knew then..." But, it's bullshit, and I should have realized that sooner. Obama is getting my vote by default now. Not exactly the energized support he was looking for.
But he's correct on the most important issue of this election: The Iraq War. It IS about judgement. I think Hillary Clinton is a fantastic politician, and it may be her undoing. She was afraid like everyone else. When that bill came up she considered it political suicide to vote against it. And she may have been right...at the time.
What troubles me about this is easy: "Right and wrong" didn't appear to be a part of her thinking process. This is something that Bill Clinton was a genius at. He found a way to make big business happy, while doing some good at the same time. There was some balance to it. And this is their biggest difference. Bill Clinton managed to walk a tightrope where others had failed. I was hoping for a second Clinton administration in hopes that we could return to some of that ideal. But it's going to take Barack Obama to carry the true Clinton legacy. Weird'eh?
This war must end.
I can no longer accept Hillary Clinton's response to the war: "If I knew then..."
George Galloway was recently on the UK show Question Time, and he (as usual) both knocked my socks off, and brought some clarity to the Iraq debate:
MP's [Members of Parliment] now regularly come up to me and say 'If we'd known then what we know now we wouldn't have voted for the war.' In which case I say 'You're either too stupid to be an MP, or you're too wicked to be an MP, because millions of British people, even before they knew what they know now, knew that this was a bad idea." That about sums it up for me.
