A 13 year old girl was injured during a ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom today in Louisville, a park official said. The accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on the Superman Tower of Power, said Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg.
The extent of the person’s injury was unknown, Goldberg said. A Louisville Metrosafe official said the victim's foot was severed.
The ride takes passengers straight up 177 feet before a free-fall of 154 feet, reaching a speed of 54 mph.
It is unclear at what point during the ride the person was injured, Goldberg said.
The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Louisville EMS said it could not comment on the extent of the person’s injuries due to privacy laws. Witnesses claim that they saw a cable from the ride hit the 13 year old girl while the passengers were on their way down during Superman - Tower of Powers free fall. Read more... Updated: A Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom ride that severed a 13-year-old girl's feet above the ankles had no history of problems, state inspection reports released yesterday indicate. The accident Thursday prompted at least eight theme parks across the country to close similar thrill rides until they could be inspected. Inspectors with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Office of Consumer and Environmental Protection spent yesterday trying to determine why a cable broke free while the girl was on the Superman Tower of Power ride, injuring her, said Bill Clary, a spokesman for the department.
Update: 07/03/07 "Our investigators are analyzing a tremendous volume of evidence in order to piece together exactly what happened," Wilbur Frye, executive director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Office of Consumer and Environmental Protection, said in a statement. "It's more important to be right than to be fast." Kaitlyn Lasitter had her feet severed above the ankles by a cable that broke when she was on the ride June 21. Officials don't know why the cable broke. Kaitlyn, a Highland Middle School student, remains in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., said John Howser, a spokesman for the hospital. "She's continuing her recovery," Howser said. Kaitlyn's parents have released no details about her condition. The biggest question most of you are asking: have Kaitlyn Lasitter's feet been reattached?
The simple answer is we don't know for sure. Sources familiar with this case tell us one of her feet has been reattached, the other has not. But we can't get that confirmed, mainly because of a federal health privacy law, called HIPPA that prevents Vanderbilt Hospital from releasing health information.
Update: 7/12 Six Flags Sued After Teen Loses Feet
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The parents of a Louisville, Ky., girl whose feet were severed by a ride at Six Flags’ Kentucky Kingdom filed suit Thursday against the park, WLKY-TV reported. The feet of Kaitlyn Lasitter, 13, were torn off just above the ankles while she rode the Superman Tower of Power last month. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and alleges, among other things, negligence in inspecting the ride. It also asks the judge to issue a temporary injunction to stop the park from altering or destroying the ride. Investigators said it could be weeks before they know what caused the accident. Officials at Six Flags said they have not seen a copy of the lawsuit yet and, for now, are not commenting.
